the parts that comprise our personality. These parts are formed from significant emotional experiences with important caretakers in earlier life and which have become an integral part of our being. These internal parts or “objects” influence our choice of people in our present life and are expressed in the way we interact with them. Internal objects may also be modified through relationships with significant people, such as a therapist.
Object relations psychotherapy focuses on the relationship between the therapist and the client. As the therapist and client work together to understand the client’s internal world and its effect on the client’s relationships, both therapist and client are in a relationship themselves. This therapeutic relationship becomes the “laboratory” in which the therapist can study firsthand the client’s ways of relating and the therapist can use this information to help the client achieve understanding and learn how to change.
